The latest numbers from CMPD, obtained by WBT, paint a disturbing picture about crime in the center city whether it’s murders or flashers.

Since January,  there have been nine murders around the uptown,  compared to only three killings in all of last year.

That’s a 200% increase.

A recent murder in the busy Brevard Court rattled lunch crowds.

“To see this, and all the stabbings going on, makes it hard to be comfortable in my environment,” said one man who saw the killing.

Other serious crimes in the center city are also on the rise:

Rapes are up slightly.   And there have been 76 assaults with a gun so far this year;  that’s up 18% over 2024.

And you’re more likely to face harassment from the homeless or other troublemakers, as reports of indecent exposure are up 66%.

CMPD Major Gene Limm announced stepped-up patrols around the square — with zero tolerance for bad behavior.

There will also be more officers at night, keeping an eye on bars and nightclubs where several fatal shootings have happened in recent weeks.
