Senator Thom Tillis Discusses Re-Election Decision, Trump Relationship, and Key Issues on Good Morning BT

North Carolina Senator Thom Tillis joined Bo Thompson and Beth Troutman on Good Morning BT for an exclusive interview following his recent announcement that he will not seek re-election in 2026.

In a candid conversation, Tillis opened up about his decision, his relationship with former President Donald Trump, and his thoughts on pressing political topics.

Tillis explained that his choice not to run for another term was not made lightly, citing months of reflection and what he called “confirmatory due diligence.”

He emphasized his commitment to prioritizing sound policy over political ambition, even if it meant opposing Trump on certain issues.

Specifically, Tillis discussed his opposition to the “Big Beautiful Bill” (BBB), a piece of legislation he felt would harm North Carolina’s Medicaid system and create long-term financial challenges for the state.

Despite his opposition, Tillis reaffirmed his respect for Trump but expressed concerns about the advice the former president has been receiving from unelected advisors.

The conversation also touched on the possibility of Lara Trump, the former president’s daughter-in-law, running for Tillis’ Senate seat.

While Tillis acknowledged her name recognition, he raised questions about the challenges of running a statewide campaign in North Carolina, particularly for someone who has not lived in the state for years.

In addition, Tillis shared his unfiltered thoughts on the Epstein files, calling for full transparency and accountability.

He criticized the lack of action on the issue, stating, “Release the damn files. If it’s a nothing burger, let it be a nothing burger. If it’s not, people should go to prison.”

The interview offered a rare glimpse into Tillis’ perspective as he prepares to step away from the Senate, highlighting his focus on policy, his willingness to challenge party norms, and his vision for North Carolina’s future.
