Luke Kuechly played only eight NFL seasons before concussions forced him into early retirement at 28, but he crammed a Hall of Fame résumé into that window. The Boston College product went ninth overall to Carolina in 2012 and immediately became the engine of one of the league’s most feared defenses, winning Defensive Rookie of the Year, Defensive Player of the Year, five First-Team All-Pro nods, and seven Pro Bowl selections along the way.

1. Draft night, 2012 — Panthers take him ninth overall

Carolina bet its defensive future on a Boston College linebacker with elite instincts, and the payoff was immediate and enormous.

2. Rookie tackle title (2012)

Kuechly led the entire NFL in tackles as a rookie, a rare feat that foreshadowed the workhorse career ahead and earned him Defensive Rookie of the Year.
