Charlotte Leaders Seeks Public Input in Search for Next CMPD Chief

A nationwide search is underway to find the next chief of the Charlotte-Mecklenburg Police Department.
The new chief will begin in 2026, following the retirement of Chief Johnny Jennings, who announced in May that he will step down on Jan. 1, 2026. Jennings, who joined CMPD in 1992, has served as chief since July 2020. He succeeded Kerr Putney, who held the role for five years.
As part of the process, city leaders are asking for public input on the department’s priorities. A community survey is open through Sept. 5 and asks residents to rank the importance of issues such as crime prevention, response times, homelessness, youth engagement and racial disparities.
