With Tax Day fast approaching, North Carolinians are getting a bit of extra time thanks to the federal disaster declaration for Hurricane Helene.

Originally set for April 15, the tax filing deadline has been extended to May 1, 2025, giving residents an additional couple of weeks to submit both state and federal income tax returns.

This extension applies to individuals and businesses across North Carolina, following the disaster relief provisions from FEMA.

While the official state filing deadline remains April 15, the North Carolina Department of Revenue will waive late penalties for those who file their state taxes and pay any owed taxes by the new May 1 deadline.

Tax experts, however, advise filing by the original April 15 date to avoid the risk of late filing fees caused by processing issues or any miscommunication.
