Both presidential campaigns are dealing with controversial comments made by supporters and surrogates that threaten to overshadow their closing arguments to voters.
President Joe Biden faced backlash for calling some supporters “garbage,” while Donald Trump seized on Biden’s remarks and accused him of demonizing Latinos.
The White House clarified that Biden was referring to rhetoric, not people, but both candidates are now forced to respond to the controversy. With the election just days away, these missteps could have an impact on the outcome in key battleground states.
“Joe Biden finally said what he and Kamala really think of our supporters,” Trump said during a rally in Rocky Mount, North Carolina. “He called them ‘garbage,’ and they mean it, even though, without question, my supporters are far higher quality than crooked Joe, lyin’ Kamala.”
“My response to Joe and Kamala is very simple: You can’t lead America if you don’t love Americans. You just can’t,” he added.
Additionally, the former president’s fallout over comments about Puerto Rico continues, with singer Nicky Jam withdrawing his endorsement after appearing at a Trump rally.
