Despite deaths in the jail, and hundreds of murder defendants awaiting trials, Mecklenburg Democrats re-elected both the Sheriff and District Attorney in yesterday’s primary. Meanwhile, NC Republicans picked their candidates for the state Supreme Court and Court of Appeals.

The two challengers to Mecklenburg County Sheriff Garry McFadden say the jail is not safe for inmates or employees, prompting staff to leave for neighboring counties. Responding during last night’s debate, McFadden said it’s a minor problem attributable to COVID.
