“On Inauguration Day, President-elect Biden will sign roughly a dozen actions,” White House chief of staff Ron Klain wrote in a memo last week. “While the policy objectives in these executive actions are bold, I want to be clear: the legal theory behind them is well-founded and represents a restoration of an appropriate, constitutional role for the President.”

The former Vice President fought back tears as he thanked his supporters less than 24 hours before taking over the 46th President of the United States. "In our family, the values we share, the character we strive for, the way we view the world—it all comes from home. It all comes from Delaware," Biden said.

President-elect Joe Biden steps into the Oval Office with the country deeply divided worse than it was four years ago. From the COVID-19 crisis to the economy and racial inequality, the former vice president is preparing to enact a sweeping set of executive orders within the first days of his presidency. 

Garland, a federal appeals court judge in Washington, D.C., was nominated for a Supreme Court seat by President Obama to fill the vacancy left by the death of Justice Antonin Scalia, but snubbed by Republicans six months before the 2016 presidential election.

Michael Regan, 44, would be the first African-American to take the post. He was instrumental in leading the state's multi-billion-dollar cleanup of coal ash and worked with members of the GOP legislature in Raleigh to improve environmental standards in North Carolina.
