Robert Harrington named new Charlotte mayor

Charlotte City Council selected Rob Harrington as the city’s next mayor, replacing Vi Lyles after a process with more than 100 applicants. Harrington, will serve through December 2027 and says he does not plan to run for a full term.

On Monday, the Charlotte City Council named Robert “Rob” Harrington as the mayor of North Carolina’s largest city for the next 17 months.

The council selected Harrington following a multi-week process that drew more than 100 applicants. After a series of nominations and public interviews, Harrington emerged as one of five finalists, who included former Charlotte City Council member Harold Cogdell, Carrie Cook, Mayor Pro Tem James Mitchell Jr., and state Sen. Caleb Theodros.

Harrington currently serves as president of the North Carolina Bar Association and has held numerous positions, including previously being chair of the Charlotte Mecklenburg Library Board. However, this is his first time holding elected office.

During interviews with council members, Harrington emphasized the importance of restoring trust and improving collaboration within city government. He described himself as a process person and said he wants to ensure city leaders have the information necessary to make informed decisions on major issues facing Charlotte. Among the challenges awaiting the new mayor are ongoing debates over transportation, growth, crime, and infrastructure in one of the nation’s fastest-growing cities.

In early May, Mayor Vi Lyles announced she would be resigning on June 30 and would not seek another term. Lyles has served as mayor of Charlotte since 2017 and secured a decisive reelection victory in 2025, defeating Republican challenger Terrie Donovan 70% to 25%.

“Serving as Charlotte’s mayor has been the honor of my life,” Lyles said in early May. “I am proud of our record navigating various challenges, strengthening our economy, investing in our neighborhoods, and building a foundation for Charlotte’s continued success during a time of rapid growth. Now, it is time for the next phase of my life, to spend more time with my grandchildren and for someone new to lead us forward.”

Harrington has indicated he does not plan to seek election once his term ends in December 2027.
