Historic Lake Lure Bridge to Be Demolished After Hurricane Damage

Nearly a year after Hurricane Helene’s destructive path through western North Carolina, one of the region’s most picturesque attractions is set to be torn down.
The Lake Lure Flowering Bridge in Rutherford County, known for its colorful gardens and mountain views, suffered irreparable damage from last September’s flooding and high winds.
Originally built in 1925, the three-arched bridge was transformed into the Lake Lure Flowering Bridge in 2013 by the volunteer group Friends of the Lake Lure Flowering Bridge, following its decommissioning.
The site drew more than 150,000 visitors annually, offering a unique blend of history, horticulture, and Blue Ridge beauty. Demolition is scheduled to begin later this month, marking the end of a local landmark.
