The Fighting Irish (10-1) took Clemson to the wire in South Bend on Nov. 7 with a 47-40 double overtime win, casting doubt if Dabo Swinney's team would make it back for another championship run. As fate would have it, the five-time defending ACC champions took home a sixth consecutive title over the conference newcomers with a 34-10 win on Saturday night.Â
The two teams battled into overtime on Nov. 7 with the then top-ranked Tigers, omit Trevor Lawrence, dropping their first regular season game since 2017 with a 47-40 loss to the Fighting Irish. A match-up that likely would've been held over to the CFB Playoff is now twice as nice in ACC play due to the COVID-19 pandemic. Notre Dame (10-0) went from being an FBS independent to becoming the 15th member of the ACC in order to have a full schedule this season
