Some warning signs to be aware of when it comes to elder care facilities are unexplained physical injuries, sudden changes in personal hygiene, and unexplained weight loss or dehydration.

It’s so important to spend the time to find the best eldercare facility for your elderly parent; it’s probably one of the biggest decisions a family can make. Whether the setting is an assisted living community, nursing home, memory care center, or long-term care facility, families trust caregivers to provide safe, respectful, and attentive support.

The problem is that there are a lot of elder care facilities out there where elder abuse is the norm. How do you know you are choosing a retirement home that’s safe for your parent? Assisted living facilities do come with certain warning signs that you need to be aware of.

Unexplained Physical Injuries

Bruises, cuts, burns, fractures, or repeated falls without clear explanations may warrant closer attention. While accidents can happen, recurring injuries or inconsistent explanations from staff should not be ignored.

Families should ask questions about how injuries occurred and whether proper documentation exists. Open communication and transparency are important indicators of a facility’s commitment to resident safety.

When concerns arise, it is often appropriate to request additional information and monitor the situation closely.

Sudden Changes in Personal Hygiene

Residents should generally receive assistance with bathing, grooming, dressing, oral care, and other daily needs when required. The following signs may indicate that essential care tasks are not being performed consistently:

  • Unwashed hair
  • Dirty clothing
  • Body odor
  • Poor overall cleanliness

Changes in appearance can sometimes reflect staffing shortages, neglect, or communication breakdowns.

Family members should pay attention to whether a loved one’s personal care needs are being met appropriately.

Unexplained Weight Loss or Dehydration

These signs may indicate problems with meal assistance, food quality, monitoring, or medical oversight:

Seniors in nursing homes who require help eating or drinking may be particularly vulnerable if staffing levels are inadequate.

Regular observation of eating habits and physical condition can help families identify potential concerns before they become more serious. It’s important to take changes in your elderly parent as a warning sign and not to ignore anything or try to explain away changes as inconsequential.

It’s better to be overly conscious and careful than to ignore warning signs in a retirement home, especially the ones listed above.

Watch for Warning Signs in Elder Care Facilities

You care about your elderly parent, even though you can’t care for them on your own anymore. Elderly care facilities are there to substitute for your loving care, but sometimes, they can be dangerous for your elderly parent to live in. Watch out for all the warning signs listed above.

If your intuition is telling you something is wrong with the nursing home or their staff seems off, then trust your gut and remove your elderly parent.
