Duke Energy Ask To Reduce Power Ahead of Weekend Winter Storm

As a winter storm approaches, Duke Energy is asking customers to voluntarily reduce electricity usage to help manage demand and prepare for potential impacts.
The storm is expected to bring freezing temperatures and icy conditions to the region over the weekend.
The utility issued a “Power Hours” advisory on Tuesday evening, urging customers to conserve energy between 6 a.m. and 9 a.m. on January 21.
To assist with this effort, Duke Energy recommended setting thermostats to the “auto” mode, which limits fan operation to when heating or cooling is active, and taking shorter showers to reduce water heating needs.
Forecasters predict the storm could affect the Charlotte area from Saturday night through Sunday afternoon, with the possibility of significant ice accumulation and a wintry mix.
Duke Energy’s request is part of its strategy to prepare the power grid for increased demand during the cold weather and to address any potential storm-related disruptions.
The company emphasized that participation in the conservation effort is entirely voluntary and will not impact the reliability of electric service. Customers who take part will receive follow-up emails detailing their energy usage during the Power Hours period, comparing it to other households and highlighting any savings achieved.
