Mecklenburg County officially broke ground Thursday on Eastland Park, marking a new chapter for the historic Eastland site. Construction began this fall, with completion expected in spring 2027.

“Today is actually about restoration, it’s about community building, because for far too long, residents of this community have worked to have this site redeveloped,” said Mecklenburg Board of County Commissioners Chair Mark Jerrell during the ceremony. “This 4.5-acre park that we are building here will not only resuscitate this area, it will also serve as an oasis for various generations to appreciate and to enjoy. Eastland Park will be a space of pride, wellness, social connection and well-being.”

The park’s design was shaped through months of community input to ensure it reflects East Charlotte’s history and the neighborhood’s needs. It will connect directly to the nearby Eastland Yards mixed-use development.

The park will include:

  • Playground
  • Terraced, grassy lawn
  • Artificial turf lawn
  • Walking trails
  • Covered picnic and performance areas
  • Court for basketball, futsal and hockey
  • Fenced dog lounge
  • Seating
  • Landscaping
  • Restrooms

At the center of the park will be a sprayground featuring Eastland’s iconic rising sun logo, originally designed by Alfred Kloke for the Eastland Mall in the 1970s. The logo, now a symbol of east Charlotte’s resilience and pride, was included in collaboration with CharlotteEAST.
