Charlotte Mayor Wins Democratic Primary

Charlotte Mayor Vi Lyles secured the Democratic nomination in Tuesday’s primary, positioning her for a November re-election bid as the city faces growing national attention over public safety.
Lyles won decisively with 70.75% of the vote, far outpacing challenger Brendan Maginnis, who finished second with 12.19%. In total, 42,442 votes were cast, with results to be certified at a later date.
Lyles will face Republican Terrie Donovan and Libertarian Rob Yates in the general election.
First elected in 2017, Lyles is Charlotte’s longest-serving mayor since Pat McCrory’s 14-year tenure. A November victory would make her the city’s longest-serving Democratic mayor, surpassing the eight-year records held by John M. Belk and Stanford Brookshire.
