CMPD Warns of Spike in Cell Phone Thefts in South End

Charlotte-Mecklenburg Police are warning the public about a sharp rise in cell phone thefts across South End. Officers say thieves are targeting people at busy bars, restaurants, and outdoor patios, mainly during peak evening hours.
According to police, the crimes happen fast, with phones taken from back pockets, purses, or even directly from someone’s hand, often without the victim noticing until it’s too late. Some bars in the area have reported multiple incidents.
“If you put your phone down for just a moment, there are people that are out there that are targeting your cell phone, whether it be at your table, whether it be at the bar, whether it’s sticking out of the back of your pants, there are people that are out there looking to take your phone.” CMPD Captain Christian Wagner said in a video shared on social media. “So we’re asking people to be really focused on where they have their phone, especially if they’ve been drinking. Make sure that you have it in a place that’s secure.”
CMPD is urging residents and visitors to stay alert and keep their phones secure while out.
