Dr. Stephen P. Leatherman, a professor of coastal research at Florida International University, is known as one of the world's foremost beach experts and goes by the name Dr. Beach. Every year, he compiles a list of the top beaches with a very specific set of criteria ranging from water temperature to number of sunny days in the area and appearance of the water.
Brown, 42, was killed by deputies as he sat in his car on the morning of April 21. According to the initial autopsy, authorities fired several shots with five of them striking Brown in the back and a fatal one to the back of his head. Womble claims Brown's vehicle made contact with officers before the killing.
Officers were called for a wellness check at a residence in the Brown's Chapel area of Watauga County on Wednesday morning. This was reportedly after the homeowner and his family were unaccounted for and did not show up for work, according to the statement.
On Tuesday, the FBI said is has opened a civil rights investigation into Brown's death to determine whether federal laws were violated. The agency said it will work with the U.S. Attorney's Office for the Eastern District of North Carolina to assess the case and the role played by deputies. They provided no further comment about the case, citing the ongoing investigation.
Brown was trying to flee in his car outside his house as deputies shot at him, according to a witness. The 9-1-1 dispatch audio from that day indicates a similar story as first responders are heard saying a man had gunshot wounds to the back. It's unknown what led up to the incident. Brown's family and their attorneys are calling for the unedited video to be released to the public immediately.
