North Carolina’s Department of Health and Human Services says more than 27,000 people who received the first doses of the COVID-19 vaccine in the state were nonresidents.

Data shows that roughly 3 percent of people living out-of-state were inoculated over the past six weeks, receiving the initial doses of the vaccine manufactured by Pfizer or Moderna.

As of Thursday (2/12), 1.38 million Coronavirus vaccines have been administered in North Carolina to healthcare workers and those at least 65 years old.

One reason for the surge of nonresidents coming to The Tar Heel State is due to the frustration with lack of available appointments in South Carolina. About 628K people have received their first dose of the vaccine in The Palmetto State, according to data.

North Carolina has gone from being ranked 25th to 9th overall for vaccine distribution over the past three weeks. The state is averaging over 45,000 vaccines per day, which is double the amount of distribution from South Carolina at 20,000 per day.
