The final AP Top 25 lists the overall No. 1 seed for March Madness as No. 1.
With 48 of 61 first-place votes Alabama overtook Houston, who fell in the American Athletic Conference final without its star guard Marcus Sasser. Alabama won the SEC Tournament to go with its regular-season title.
As for the North Carolina teams, one is in and the other fell way below season predictions.
After defeating Virginia to win the ACC Tournament, Duke jumped the most in the final poll, moving up nine spots to No. 12 – the team’s highest ranking since the third week of the season.
They are seeded fifth in the East of the NCAA Tournament under first-year head coach Jon Scheyer.
UNC concluded one of the school’s most disappointing seasons. After their loss to Virginia in the conference tournament, the Tar Heels did not make the bid for the big dance.
In a social media post, the team announced the Heels would not participate in the NIT tournament:
“All season our focus and goal have been on being the best team we can possibly become and reaching our full potential to give us another opportunity to compete, play for and win an NCAA championship,” coach Hubert Davis said in a statement. “Although we no longer have that opportunity and this season wasn’t what we had hoped for, I want to thank our players and staff for their hard work and love for Carolina Basketball.”
North Carolina is the first preseason No. 1 team to miss the tournament.
“Many factors go into postseason play and we believe now is the time to focus on moving ahead, preparing for next season and the opportunity to again compete for ACC and NCAA championships,” Davis said in the statement. “I also want to thank our great fans for their incredible support. Our commitment to you is what drives us to improve our program in every way.”
