The Wake County District Attorney’s office has been pursuing a criminal charge against the North Carolina Attorney General over a campaign ad that may have violated a state law that prohibits lying about a political opponent.

The DA, Lorrin Freeman, is a Democrat. So is AG Josh Stein. According to reporting by WBTV, the pursuit of the case has “alienated [Freeman] from some members of her own party who say the move is effectively political suicide.”

Meanwhile, South Carolina state lawmakers are debating abortion restrictions. The issue has split the Republican members of the legislature.

These two stories indicate there are differing opinions inside political parties. And, in the case of the SC abortion debate, the only reason lawmakers have the space to hash out the policy is because the decision was restored to the states by the US Supreme Court.
