Liberty coach Laimbeer: Shoni Schimmel taking time off

NEW YORK (AP) -- Liberty guard Shoni Schimmel has missed the first few days of training camp and isn't expected with the team any time soon. "Shoni has decided to take some time off," New York Liberty coach Bill Laimbeer said. She suffered a concussion in late August that sidelined her for the remainder of the season. As far as how much time Schimmel is planning to take, Laimbeer didn't want to say.

Cambage returns to Australia's WNBL with Melbourne Boomers

MELBOURNE, Australia (AP) -- Australia center Liz Cambage has signed for the Melbourne Boomers and is set to play in the domestic WNBL season starting in October. Cambage, the star of the national team and the first woman to dunk in the Olympic women's basketball competition, has played for mainly for clubs in the U.S. WNBA and in China since winning the Most Valuable Player award and the WNBL title with the Boomers in 2011.

New USC women's coach Mark Trakh hires assistant coaches

LOS ANGELES (AP) -- New Southern California women's basketball coach Mark Trakh is bringing some of his former staff with him to Los Angeles. Jason Glover, Aarika Hughes and Blanche Alverson will join Trakh as he begins his second stint coaching the Trojans. Trakh said Wednesday that the group is "like family" and they work well together. Glover will serve as associate head coach.

Belmont hires Bart Brooks as new women's basketball coach

NASHVILLE, Tenn. (AP) -- Belmont has hired Bart Brooks as the Bruins' new women's basketball coach, replacing Cameron Newbauer who left for Florida. Athletic director Scott Corley announced the hiring Monday, and Brooks will be introduced at a news conference Tuesday. Brooks, 36, spent the past 11 seasons as an assistant coach at DePaul with coach Doug Bruno.

Louisville starter Mariya Moore will transfer from program

LOUISVILLE, Ky. (AP) -- Louisville starting forward Mariya Moore will transfer from the program after finishing as the Cardinals' third-leading scorer last season. Women's basketball spokesman Ira Green confirmed Saturday that the three-time All-Atlantic Coast Conference selection will leave the school. Moore averaged 12 points and 5.1 rebounds and had a career-high 175 assists while starting 36 games last season.

Alexa Middleton leaves Lady Vols, intends to transfer

KNOXVILLE, Tenn. (AP) -- Alexa Middleton has left Tennessee's program and intends to transfer. Lady Volunteers coach Holly Warlick said Friday that Middleton is "a great young lady who felt like she needed a change, and we will do our best to help her find that opportunity." The 5-foot-9 guard from Murfreesboro, Tennessee, will complete her spring semester at Tennessee. Middleton made 13 starts as a junior this past season and averaged 7.9 points, 2.

USC brings back Mark Trakh as women's basketball coach

LOS ANGELES (AP) -- Mark Trakh is returning to Southern California as coach of the women's basketball team. He replaces Cynthia Cooper-Dyke, who resigned last month with no public explanation after going 70-56 in four years at her alma mater. Trakh had a 90-64 record during his first stint with the Trojans from 2005-09.

Briann January joins ASU women's basketball staff

TEMPE, Ariz. (AP) -- Former Arizona State star Briann January is joining the Sun Devils as a women's basketball assistant coach, the school announced Wednesday night. January helped lead Arizona State to 104 wins in her time at the school and then went on to play for the WNBA's Indiana Fever. She is set to begin her ninth year with Indiana and will continue to play as she coaches.

Louisville's Walz to head new Under-23 USA Basketball team

COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. (AP) -- Jeff Walz will head the inaugural USA Basketball Under-23 women's team that will play in Tokyo this summer. The Louisville women's coach will be joined by Western Kentucky's Michelle Clark-Heard and Princeton's Courtney Banghart. The four-team round-robin tournament will include the U.S., Australia, Japan and Canada starting Aug. 7. The Americans will have training camp at the end of July and a 12-member team will be chosen from that camp.

Beatrice Mompremier leaving Baylor women after 2 seasons

WACO, Texas (AP) -- Beatrice Mompremier is leaving the Baylor basketball team after two seasons. Baylor said Tuesday that Mompremier has been granted her release, which will allow the 6-foot-4 post player from Miami to transfer and play at another school. Mompremier averaged 8.3 points and 6.5 rebounds in 32 games this season as the Lady Bears made it to the NCAA Elite Eight for the fourth year in a row.
