Arizona Wildcats name Romar associate head coach

TUCSON, Ariz. (AP) -- Lorenzo Romar has been named associate head coach at Arizona, joining Sean Miller's staff a month after he was fired as head coach at Washington. Romar coached the Huskies for 15 seasons, winning Pac-12 coach of the year honors three times. But Washington went 9-22 last season and hadn't been to the NCAA tournament since 2011. Romar compiled a 298-195 record at Washington, including two Sweet 16 appearances.

Arizona's Trier to return to Tucson for junior season

TUCSON, Ariz. (AP) -- Arizona guard Allonzo Trier is returning for his junior season, bolstering what was already going to be a strong team. Trier's decision was first reported by ESPN on Thursday. Trier considered leaving early for the NBA after his freshman season and was suspended the first 19 games in 2016-17 for testing positive for performance-enhancing drugs. Trier ended up being the team's leading scorer at 17.

Arizona's Simmons leaving after freshman season for NBA

TUCSON, Ariz. (AP) -- Arizona freshman guard Kobi Simmons is declaring for the NBA draft and will not return to school. The school announced Simmons' decision Wednesday. An athletic 6-foot-5 guard from Atlanta, Simmons was a key member to coach Sean Miller's latest stellar recruiting class. Simmons appeared in all 37 games and started 19, averaging 8.7 points and 2.0 assists.

UC Santa Barbara hires Joe Pasternack as basketball coach

SANTA BARBARA, Calif. (AP) -- Joe Pasternack has been hired as UC Santa Barbara's basketball coach after serving as an assistant at Arizona for six years. He helped develop future NBA players Aaron Gordon and Stanley Johnson while in Tucson. Pasternack joined coach Sean Miller's staff in 2011-12 and was later promoted to associate head coach. The Wildcats played in five NCAA Tournaments during his stint there.

Ducks take 'another level' to first Final Four in 78 years

After a demoralizing loss to Oregon this season, Arizona coach Sean Miller suggested that if the Ducks had another level they'd be dangerous. Turns out Oregon did have another level -- and it took the team all the way to the Final Four. The Ducks wrapped up their season at 33-6, setting a record for wins, on the way to just the second national semifinal appearance in school history.

Arizona's Markkanen leaving after stellar freshman season

TUCSON, Ariz. (AP) -- Arizona freshman forward Lauri Markkanen is leaving early for the NBA and is expected to hire an agent. Markkanen made the announcement Thursday during a news conference at the school attended by his father, Pekka, and Wildcats coach Sean Miller. An athletic 7-footer from Finland, Markkanen averaged 15.6 points and 7.2 rebounds and was named a third-team All-American by The Associated Press.

Postseason success for Kentucky, UNC back AP Top 100 perches

PHOENIX (AP) -- The top of The Associated Press Top 100 all-time college basketball ranking is filled with blueblood programs that followed those strong regular seasons with runs to the Final Four or even a national championship. Still, all those poll appearances didn't guarantee postseason success. Or foreshadow it, for that matter.

Ball bounces out of UCLA to NBA; Alford stays on as coach

LOS ANGELES (AP) -- Lonzo Ball is leaving and Steve Alford is staying. The expectations at UCLA remain the same. Ball said he planned to enter the NBA draft after the Bruins lost to Kentucky in the Sweet 16 on Friday night, dashing their national title hopes. The freshman phenom helped UCLA to a 31-5 record while averaging 14.6 points, 6.0 rebounds and 7.6 assists.

Gonzaga and Xavier ready for Final Four breakthrough

SAN JOSE, Calif. (AP) -- Gonzaga coach Mark Few did not like the question but answered it anyway. His Zags had just held off West Virginia to reach the Elite Eight and he was asked if he felt like the monkey was off his back. Few gave a long answer about no one believing there was a monkey there in the first place.

Arizona's season ends in disappointment

SAN JOSE, Calif. (AP) -- Arizona's season started with adversity as its best player sat on the bench for the first two months for then-undisclosed reasons. The Wildcats suffered through a string of injuries, playing nearly a month without one of the key contributors. No matter what came Arizona's way, it kept finding ways to win.
