Top high school prospect Michael Porter Jr. picks Missouri

COLUMBIA, Mo. (AP) -- Michael Porter Jr., rated as the nation's top high school basketball prospect in his class by multiple recruiting services, says he plans to play for Missouri. Porter tweeted his college selection Friday on his verified account, one day after Missouri announced that his father had accepted a position as an assistant coach on the Tigers' staff. Porter, a 6-foot-10 forward, initially chose Washington last year when Michael Porter Sr.

Mike Hopkins heads out on his own as new coach at Washington

SEATTLE (AP) -- Mike Hopkins watched the NCAA Tournament tinged with the slightest bit of jealousy. He saw coaches he had come to know -- Chris Collins at Northwestern specifically -- who had left behind stable careers as an assistant coach and took the leap to being a head coach. It drove home the idea that Hopkins wanted the chance to create something himself, rather than trying to sustain what had previously been built.

Boeheim looks ahead without assistant beside him

Syracuse coach Jim Boeheim heads into an offseason like no other in the past two decades -- without assistant Mike Hopkins. Coming off a down year (19-15, 10-8 Atlantic Coast Conference) and without his top assistant to lend extra stability, Boeheim faces a challenging road ahead. Hopkins, who was in line to succeed his Hall of Fame mentor after next season, was hired Sunday as head coach at Washington. "It'll be difficult," Boeheim said.

Boeheim fully intended for next year to be last at Syracuse

SYRACUSE, N.Y. (AP) -- Jim Boeheim says he fully intended for next year to be his last as Syracuse's basketball coach, and he never thought otherwise until Sunday. That's when longtime assistant Mike Hopkins -- and Syracuse's coach-in-waiting -- left to become head coach at Washington. Boeheim said at a news conference Monday he never tried to change the agreement he made with the university to retire after next season.
