Unloaded gun found in backpack at South Carolina high school

GREENVILLE, S.C. (AP) -- Authorities say they found an unloaded gun in a backpack being carried by a student at a South Carolina high school. Greenville County Sheriff's spokesman Sgt. Jimmy Bolt said in a news release that someone told officials at Berea High School about the gun around 1:30 p.m. Thursday. Bolt says the principal and school police officer approached the student, who handed them the backpack and ran.

More than 2,000 without power after South Carolina storms

COLUMBIA, S.C. (AP) -- More than 2,000 customers are without electricity after storms moved across South Carolina. The storms late Tuesday and early Wednesday left more than 20,000 customers without power at the height of the storms. South Carolina Electric & Gas Company reported about 2,000 customers without service Wednesday morning. Most were in Lexington County. Duke Energy had about 400 customers without service. Dillon County had about 300 without service early Wednesday.

RALEIGH, N.C. (AP) -- A former North Carolina police chief whose mother is Italian and father is Somali said Sunday that he's disappointed with his country of 42 years after he was detained at John F. Kennedy International Airport. Former Greenville Police Chief Hassan Aden of Alexandria, Virginia, who now works as a law enforcement consultant, said he was detained March 13 on his return trip from Paris for his mother's 80th birthday.

Greenville Co. sheriff to set up citizen advisory board

GREENVILLE, S.C. (AP) -- The new Greenville County sheriff says he'll start a citizen advisory board what he hopes will help create a more transparent department. The Greenville News reports (http://grnol.co/2naBuQ0) that Sheriff Will Lewis says the board is designed to serve as a liaison between the community and office. Lewis said Friday that the board will focus on topics such as crime prevention, budget, staffing and quality of life issues.

Allen looks to lead 2nd seeded Duke to Sweet 16

Thornwell leads Gamecocks to 93-73 NCAA win over Marquette

Greenville doctor, son jailed following drug raid at home

GREENVILLE, N.C. (AP) -- A Greenville physician and his son are in jail after the State Bureau of Investigation raided their home as well as the doctor's office. A statement from the SBI on Friday said agents served warrants at the home of 59-year-old Dr. Clinton Leinweber Jr., who's charged with three counts of trafficking opium or heroin. The agency said the charges resulted from fraudulent prescriptions that he prescribed.

Arkansas holds off Seton Hall 77-71 in NCAA South Region

GREENVILLE, S.C. (AP) -- Arkansas did just enough in the final minute to push its way through the NCAA Tournament's first round -- aided by a couple of eye-catching calls and noncalls by the officiating crew, too. Jaylen Barford hit the go-ahead layup with 57.8 seconds left to help Arkansas hold off Seton Hall 77-71 on Friday in the first round of the South Region.
