Variety to honor Jessica Chastain, Chelsea Clinton, others

NEW YORK (AP) -- Jessica Chastain, Chelsea Clinton, Gayle King, Blake Lively, Audra McDonald and Viacom vice chairwoman Shari Redstone are being recognized by Variety at its Power of Women: New York luncheon. The Hollywood trade publication announced Monday that the six women will be honored April 21 at the Cipriani restaurant in New York. "Saturday Night Live" star Vanessa Bayer will host the private event.

Alan Menken on cuts, adds and intimidating Emma Watson

BEVERLY HILLS, Calif. (AP) -- Composer Alan Menken really wanted to include the song "If I Can't Love Her" in the new live-action "Beauty and the Beast." The soaring ballad, sung by the Beast, was written for the Broadway musical as the closing number before intermission. "It's a monumentally good song. But it is unique to the structure of a stage musical," Menken said recently.

Subtle (very) 'gay moment' in new Disney film generates buzz

To be clear: "Brokeback Mountain," this isn't. The so-called "gay moment" in Disney's new live-action version of "Beauty and the Beast" is subtle -- so subtle that one could easily miss it with an ill-timed sneeze or glance away from the screen. And it may sail over the heads of young viewers. But the cast and director say it is indeed a gay moment --one they're proud of.
