The History of WBT
1990
John Hancock joined WBT to host a midday talk-show. WBTV personalities Mike and Barbara McKay hosted an early afternoon talkshow on WBT.
1991
WBT News won the Ohio State University Award for a 7-hour special about drugs in Charlotte in 1990. Moira Quinn joined WBT from WBTV to co-host the morning show with Don Russell. "The Rush Limbaugh Show" began on WBT.
1992
Moira Quinn hosted an afternoon talk show. Jon Robinson was hired to host a new morning news-based program called "Charlotte's Morning News". News Director John Stokes, Sharon Schoffelman and Sports Director Jim Szoke anchored the news and sports segments. Jim Barroll and Brad Schulz handled reporting.
On April 10, a cook-out was held at the Pine Terrace Cafeteria to celebrate the 70th Anniversary of WBT. The staff received a color skyline poster commemorating the 70th Anniversary. And "The Moira Quinn Show" featured some past WBT employees talking about their experiences at the Pioneer Station of the South. Some of the honored guests included: Charles Crutchfield, Bill Curry, Ty Boyd, Bob Lacey, and a few others.
1993
Midday talk host John Hancock led the drive to raise money for sponsorship of a Habitat for Humanity house in north Charlotte. WBT employees helped build the house along with some other corporate sponsors.
1994
WBT is named the flagship station of Charlotte's new N.F.L. team, The Carolinas Panthers, scheduled to begin play in the Fall of 1995. Jerry Klein began a late-night talkshow.
1995
In February, WBT announced acquistion of WBZK-FM, Chester, S.C. WBT will simulcast of 99.3 FM. The new station will get WBT's night-time signal into Gaston and surrounding counties.
1996
Gerry Vaillancourt began his sports talk show on April 1. The University of North Carolina Tarheels return to WBT after a four year absence. WBT's Penny Pitch Children's Charities awarded over $60,000 to area organizations benefiting medical and emotional needs of kids in the listening area.
1997
The Dr. Laura Show on WBT started in January and a revamped Charlotte's Morning News with Al Gardner started in September.
1999
Richard Spires and Brad Krantz team up for an afternoon talk show in September.
