Taco Bell/ Yum Brands

Taco Bell is slicing up a new take on the chicken sandwich with a new menu item that doubles as a taco.

The new chicken taco sandwich, made up of crispy chicken and chipotle sauce in a folded pita flatbread, will be tested at select locations in Nashville, Tennessee, and Charlotte, North Carolina (priced at $2.49), starting March 11. A nationwide rollout of the new creation will happen later this year.

This is a first for Taco Bell to call an item a “sandwich,” but not the first time the national chain has offer fried chicken. The cheap alternative to real Mexican cuisine is trying to put themselves into to “chicken sandwich war” with traditional brands like Chick-Fil-A and Popeyes, who’ve benefited from the easy-to-sell products. The fast-food fight for customers with fried food becoming a more go-to option, best exemplified by the Popeyes chicken sandwich craze over the past two years.

Wendy’s, Shake Shack, and McDonald have all shaken up the menu with new chicken sandwich options in the past two months. Burger King also announced that it will replace its current crispy chicken sandwich offering with a new version later this year.

Maybe you could think of it as a next level Gordita?

Chicken sandwiches appear on 47.8% of total U.S. restaurant menus, according to Datassential’s MenuTrends. And a flood of new options from the fast food giants in the near future.
