A South Carolina GOP lawmaker has filed a bill to allow former President Donald Trump to be buried on the grounds of the state Capitol; if he is banned from being buried at Arlington National Cemetery.

The twice-impeached former president faces a lot of scrutiny over his role in the violent attack on the U.S. Capitol on January 6th. So much so, U.S. House Democrats want Trump not to be honored with a burial at one of the nation’s most revered resting places or have federal money spent on any memorials dedicated to him.

Rep. RJ May said his bill would allow for Trump to have a final resting place in South Carolina. There has been no formal commitment by the former president, but if he agreed to be buried at the S.C. Statehouse, a committee would determine a proper resting place.

Only one other person is buried on the grounds of the South Carolina Statehouse. Revolutionary War captain Swanson Lunsford, who died of yellow fever in 1799, was “interred on a remote part of the grounds because Columbia officials were likely worried the disease might spread if he was buried in a church or public cemetery,” according to Historic Columbia.

No U.S. president is currently buried in South Carolina. Former Vice President John C. Calhoun was buried at St. Phillips Churchyard in Charleston, S.C. in 1850.
